Naming Proposals

Geographic Names Victoria receives naming applications from naming authorities to:

  • name or rename a feature or road
  • name a locality
  • amend a locality boundary.

How to submit a proposal

To submit a proposal, visit Naming rules for places in Victoria.

  • road names – section 3
  • geographic features – section 4
  • localities – section 5.

Status of proposals

Once approved by the Registrar of Geographic Names the process can take up to 10 working days. Details are then provided to Vicmap Spatial Services to update VICNAMES and Vicmap (the state's authoritative dataset).
