Naming Proposals

Geographic Names Victoria receives naming applications from naming authorities to:

name or rename a feature or road
name a locality
amend a locality boundary.

Status of proposals

Once approved by the Registrar of Geographic Names the process can take up to 10 working days. Details are then provided to Vicmap Spatial Services to update VICNAMES and Vicmap (the state's authoritative dataset).

Use the following tables to check the:

status of the proposal
date it is published in the Victoria Government Gazette
when it is registered with VICNAMES.

When road names are approved by the Registrar of Geographic Names, the details are sent to Vicmap Spatial Services at the Department of Transport and Planning. VICNAMES and Vicmap, the state's authoritative dataset, are then updated. This process can take up to 10 working days.
