The naming of roads, features of interest and suburbs across Victoria ensures places and sites can be clearly identified and located.
Members of the public are encouraged to take part in the naming process:
- by proposing a name
- starting a proposal
- responding to a naming authority about a naming proposal.
The accuracy of a place name is important. It helps with the delivery of goods and services. It also reduces the chance of delay for emergency services to find a property.
Geographic Names Victoria is responsible for setting the naming rules for all places in Victoria.
The rules set out the requirements that naming authorities must follow for the naming of roads, features and localities in Victoria.

Members of the community can also help build understanding of the historical and cultural context of place naming in Victoria. This includes adding historical information to our VICNAMES register.
